GeoKey — The Official Relase
Today, we are proud to announce the official release of GeoKey, a new approach to support participatory mapping.
GeoKey provides local communities with a web-based infrastructure to collect, share and discuss local knowledge. You can use it to setup your own mapping project with your community and to collect, visualise and analyse data using the tools of your choice.
GeoKey has been developed at ExCiteS Research Group, who have long-standing experiences working with communities on aspects of citizen science and participatory mapping. The architecture and design of GeoKey reflect lessons learned during this time.
Key features
- Setup up your data structures: You decide what data your community should collect by setting up categories and attributes.
- Decide who can access, contribute and moderate data: Use user groups and data groupings — a predefined subset of all data contributed to the project — to define, which users can access, contribute and moderate data.
- Add photos and videos to your contributions: Enrich your contributions by uploading photos and videos to each of your contributions.
- Discuss: Comments on each contribution allow you and your community to discuss observations you have made.
- Connect your app using our API: Use our public REST API to build and connect applications for data collection, analysis and visualisation.

- If you are a community member and want to start mapping, head over to the Help Section to learn how to set up your participatory mapping projects.
- In the Developer Section, software developers learn how to install GeoKey on their own servers and how to build apps on top of the API.
